Focus: Voices: Bingley and Darcy: chapter 3   Written by Tracy W (4/30/2007 6:40 p.m.)
Are you new?

Back on the exclamation points. Bingley uses them, Darcy doesn't, in chapter 3 at least:

"I would not be so fastidious as you are," cried Bingley, "for a kingdom!
"Oh! she is the most beautiful creature I ever beheld!

We have energy and openness in emotion in Bingley, while Darcy comes across as more reserved and calmer.

Both use complex language (ie complex sentences that can't be split into two separate sentences). Darcy's word use is perhaps more sophisticated (detest, particularly acquainted, insupportable, tolerable), compared to Bingley's fastidious, uncommonly pretty, stupid manner, most beautiful creature but perhaps I am reaching too far here. I'm looking forward to further examination at Netherfield.
