Ah but the chance he'd marry a local girl   Written by Tracy W (4/30/2007 5:50 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Mrs B's interest is Bingley., penned by Mandy N
Are you new?

Even if JA doesn't explicitly tell us that anyone schemed for Darcy, it does seem unlikely that the thought never crossed anyone's mind. Just because it may be unlikely that Darcy would marry outside his own class, doesn't mean it's impossible. Many people buy lottery tickets even though I'd guess the odds of winning that are even lower than the odds of a rich single man marrying a gentlewoman of somewhat lower rank than him.

It takes about half the evening for Darcy's aloofness and proud manners to turn the tide against him, so there would be half the evening where the locals were not sure of Darcy's feelings.

And hey, what would a good mama of Meryton have to lose by scheming for Darcy? She's already at the ball so it's not like she has to take time off from any other pursuit. Hurst is ineligible, Bingley can only dance with one girl at a time, it wouldn't require great multi-tasking skills to fit in a bit of scheming for Darcy.
