"if she refused one gentleman she would be unable to accept another"(Robbin).

So women were expected to dance with whoever asked them to? And if they wanted to refuse one they should pretend ill or sth and not dance at all???
Seems quite becoming with all those rules of proper behaviour, yet annoying...
