Perhaps we should agree to disagree   Written by Marilynn (4/30/2007 4:04 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Darcy is afraid of being hurt?, penned by Robbin
Are you new?

I don't believe I ever said that Mr. Bingley was good (or bad). JA is explicit that Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy are polar opposites (as did I in my posting). However, she also makes us like Mr. Bingley. Perhaps you take ductile to mean malleable (open to coercion) whereas I take it to mean flexible (takes things in stride). IMO, a person can be friends with someone who is their opposite in disposition and temperament but not someone who is morally dissimilar.

There is, indeed, no proof in the text aside from what I have seen in human nature. Mr. Darcy is acting defensively. As we know, JA is a subtle but shrewd observer of human foibles and in this case one can read between the lines.

I understand Mandy was making a joke, however, unless Mr. Darcy had been ill it would have been very bad form for him not to attend the Assembly with his host.
