Guessing   Written by Kat (4/30/2007 11:07 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Ch 3 - Darcy's income, penned by Jesi
Are you new?

Generally, the way a person lived was a good indication of his income - whether he kept a carriage and how many horses, for example. In that limited society, one could guess with fair accuracy what a person's income was by details that could be obtained through gossip.

Therefore, although I'm sure that Mr. Darcy's fortune was "guesstimated" and probably made larger by word of mouth (as Austen's wry sarcasm implies), $10K was probably not off by much.

btw, I love the concept of Darcy minions spreading his importance through the crowd, even if we all know he's too proud to think he has to do that!
