I agree JA intended this statment to be seen as a mixture of irony and truth rather than any literal truth.

Apart from Mrs Bennet trying to secure a husband for a daughter, I can see no instances of 'fortune hunting' at the Meryton Assembly.

* if Darcy wants to avoid any cunning seductresses, he does by not dancing with any single woman- expect Caroline ;)

He appears rude to the assembly in general, standing aloof and the narrator does not mention him even chatting with the men about local shooting or fishing.
