Are you new?

He might be dismissing the company because he dislikes insincerity and fortune hunting. He says that dancing with women he is not acquainted with is insupportable but does not say why.

He is in a position where a cunning seductress could ensure that he is miserable for the rest of his life. Perhaps he is just avoiding the temptation to fall in love?
