I agree the favoritism is ill advised, but there is no evidence that the daughters are actually present during the conversation in Chapter One, so I don't think the situation is quite so dire as you suggest. It is only in Chapter Two that we see the first conversation in the presence of the children; Mr. Bennet hopes Mr. Bingley will like Lizzy's hat.
