This is what does it for me too   Written by BarbaraB (4/29/2007 4:09 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Disagree :-), penned by Maisy
Are you new?

My first inclination is to think that he deserves what he gets but that Meryton is tad too harsh. But then I thought it over and because of the comment he makes without concerning himself that Lizzy can hear decided, naaaaaaah, he earned it without qualification. Maybe because Lizzy takes it so well, actually to the point of repeating it to all her friends in a lively spirit, it may take some of the sting off without our realizing it. But Darcy had no way of knowing how Lizzy would take it, and just imagine if it had been Mary or some other young lady who did not have Lizzy's personality and who might have been really crushed by such a comment. This is what tipped the scale for me.
