She had him in her sights from the opening of the story. The only difference here is that she is his best friend's sister, and he was often in her company--staying at the house in which she was the mistress. Couldn't very well totally ignore her. After re-reading the scenes at Netherfield while Jane was sick, I think he just tolerated her, although at times his annoyance did bubble to the surface enough to result in a sarcastic comment or two.
