I noticed that too, Written by BrendaB (4/29/2007 11:25 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Along similar lines, penned by Line

and I think it was done in the movie to emphasize his haughtiness. When he does smile, at the wedding, your heart swells-it's all so happy.

But she misses all those smiles in the novel which is, of course, the story.
