In chapter 3, Bingley visits the Bennets for the first time. We are told that

He [Bingley] had entertained hopes of being admitted to a sight of the young ladies [...] but he only saw the father.

I wonder if that was due to the decorum of the time, or if it simply happened to be that way due to Bingley's lack of time, or some other insignificant reason.
