Meryton is a small apparently close-knit town and I think they, individually and collectively, took Darcy's behavior as a personal affront. Unfortunately, with the ever-personable, friendly and likeable Bingley as a comparison, it probably looks worse than it might have if Bingley had not been there. I have to agree that his distain has justly earned him their bad opinion. Darcy, however, does not seem to care one jot about their opinion of him.
