Well, what seemed highly improper behavior to those who first read P&P probably doesn't strike modern audiences as being so significant. I think those scenes were included to impress upon the average audience member (read: those who don't have a wide knowledge of Regency standards and mores) how immature and thoughtless the two youngest girls--especially Lydia--are.
