The events of P&P are like a contained world in themselves. The local militia in Meryton was, I think, more a reserve. In the early 1810s' many militias were stationed through England on pretext of protecting England. They were useful for putting down any local troubles as well. The behaviour of local soldiers was often criticized by both villagers and gentry.
