Despite her independence, Elizabeth still maintained civility in her manners. She wasn't even able to tell Mr. Collins to leave her side at the Netherfield ball nor dissaude him from introducing himself to Darcy. There were some things she couldn't say.

JA did follow the dictates of her time. Otherwise, she would not have been first published P&P under "by a lady" nor dedicated another novel to the Prince Regent.
