My impression   Written by Chandra S (1/19/2004 2:38 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Mr. Collins dancing, penned by Ramya
Are you new?

was that she was teasing him, much as her father does. I don't think that there was anything inherently wrong with a clergyman dancing, but I think perhaps she overestimated his pedantic nature and his puffed-up sense of propriety.

I suspect that the answer she was expecting was something ridiculous like "oh, no, as a personal representative of Her Ladyship, the Right Honourable Catherine DeBourgh, I do feel that to engage in such a common and physical entertainment.... etc, ad nauseum." In addition to the expected pleasure of hearing his ludicrous sentiments pour forth again, she is I think hoping to confirm that he will not attend and she will be free of his irritating company for the evening.

Instead, JA tells us that she is quite surprised to hear his answer. While its expression is just as ridiculous as she hoped, its substance is quite the opposite and she ends up sorry she asked.
