...easier for Mr. Bennet to know that his estate will eventually belong to a silly man whom he need not respect, than to a man whom he must dislike for being intelligent and getting Longbourn to boot? Mr. Bennet and Mr. Collins' father had some sort of "disagreement" between them, as Mr. Collins said in his letter, so maybe it makes Mr. Bennet feel better to know that the father had a ridiculous son. Just a guess.
