Mr B making fun of Mr C   Written by Mary-L (1/19/2004 1:43 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Not expecting sense, penned by Kathi
Are you new?

Since Mr Collins doesn't recognize that he is being made fun of, and replies with even more obtuseness, who is there to accuse Mr B of being rude? Mrs B surely doesn't recognize it. Mr B "listened to him with the keenest enjoyment, maintaining at the same time the most resolute composure of countenance, and except in an occasional glance at Elizabeth, requiring no partner in his pleasure."

So Elizabeth seems to be the only one who recognizes the situation. Whether she is amused, JA doesn't tell us (although P&P2 shows both Elizabeth and Jane recognizing Mr C's absurdity).

And the ethics of making fun of a guest? Mr B is a man who makes fun of his own wife in front of their children, so the ethics of making fun of a guest would be realms beyond his recognition!
