Mary is not a candidate as a wife for Mr. Collins...   Written by Mary-L (1/19/2004 1:23 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Marriage aspects..., penned by Mandy N
Are you new?

...for two important reasons, IMO:

(1) Mr Collins is looking for a bride primarily to satisfy Lady C's directions to him (Ch 14): "She had even condescended to advise him to marry as soon as he could, provided he chose with discretion..." I do not believe Mary would meet Lady C's standards at all. With Mary's preachy manners, she would antagonize Lady C very quickly, and she certainly doesn't have the obsequious manners I'll bet Lady C would want in her clergyman's wife.

(2) Having been preempted by Jane's existing suitor, Bingley, and having then been rejected in no uncertain terms by the next daughter in line, Elizabeth, I am convinced that Mr C would cross the Bennet family off his list of eligible families with marriageable daughters. I don't think his "state of angry pride" (Ch 21) would allow him to move on to the next daughter in line. This made him the perfect target for Charlotte's attentions!
