Bingley is smart   Written by Julianne E. (1/18/2004 3:41 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Mr Bingley's actions, penned by kathleen (elder)
Are you new?

]Secondly, this little throw-away line about Bingley:

]In another minute Mr. Bingley, but without seeming to have noticed what passed, took leave and rode on with his friend.

]I take this to mean that Bingley did notice that Darcy was upset (though he may not have known the reason), and that he chose to end his conversation with Jane in order to alleviate his friend's distress.

This sentence about Bingley leaving with his friend makes me think that's he's a lot smarter and aware than he lets on, but he dislikes confrontation. He deals with difficult situations in the same way I think Jane would if she were a man. IMO Her nature is one which tries to make the best of a bad situation, rather than cause herself or anyone else any stress by confronting problems head-on.
