]I do agree with your assessment of Mary, she tried to improve herself. Also, note that Kitty was disconcerted when her father called them (his youngest daughters) "silliest girls" whereas Lydia was completely indifferent. There's a tiny difference there after all.

Yes, there is a difference. IMO, Lydia is the worst of them, Kitty is not so bad, I like her better than Lydia. Mary is affected and conceited, but even she is better than Lydia.
