That particular sentence is at the end of Ch.3. I found it odd too. Doesn't it occur to Mr. Bennet that if Jane's intial sucess could lead to a marriage, it would be one Less daughter in the house? From his view,less noise,expense,etc ... And as you say, the situation of his family in relation to his estate. He is indeed complacent!
