Her mother seems to look at Jane's beauty as a commodity in marrying well (and therefore thinks well of her), and Mr. Bennet thinks well of her because he doesn't have to be troubled by her like he does with Mary, Kitty, and Lydia. You're right that they probably never bothered to get to know her.
