[But she seems to go more in the direction of her elder sisters than her younger.

It seems to me that none of the sisters pursue accomplishments like Mary does. Jane and Elizabeth have good sense and their minds are improved, but they do not obsess over writing extracts or making observations on morality. I agree that Mary certainly does not follow the example of her younger sisters, but imo she seeks to outshine her elders as well.
