I did not mean he ever fancied Jane, only that he would not have Bingley tell him what to do or whom to admire.

Reserved from the start, he found the idea of Bingley helping him to a lady of lesser beauty insupportable. Sort of: I am not here to enjoy myself, thank you very much. I much prefer 'standing about in this stupid manner.'

Darcy is fond of Bingley's cheerful diposition and Austen says he never appeared to be dissatisfied with his own, which was so very different. Hm...
