Chapter 6 - I was wondering ...   Written by Jo Y (1/16/2004 8:48 p.m.)
Are you new?

In Chapter 6, at the party at Lucas Lodge: "Mr Darcy had at first scarcely allowed her to be pretty; he had looked at her without admiration at the ball; and when they next met, he looked at her only to criticise. But no sooner had he made it clear to himself and his friends that she had hardly a good feature in her face, than he began to find it was rendered uncommonly intelligent by the beautiful expression of her dark eyes. ..." This suggests that there have been other opportunities to meet and be observed. When was the time "they next met, ..."? When Lizzie and Charlotte are having their discussion about Jane and Bingley and happiness in marriage, etc. earlier in this chapter, Lizzie does say that Jane has seen Bingley at his house and dined in company with him on four occasions. Do we assume that Lizzie and Darcy were there too? Perhaps I am too influenced by the chronology in P&P2 which suggests that the Lucas Lodge party is only the second meeting after the Meryton Assembly.
