I´m trying to think of Marys need to work so hard. Beauty has some part in it since JA states it, but her shortcomings in other areas dosn´t seem to improve despite her efforts to study.

She could have tried to please her mother by acting cute instead of doing all that hard work for knowledge and accomplishments.

I guess this is a what if? situation. But she seems to go more in the direction of her elder sisters than her younger.
