One of the changes that the adaptors made to the book is the character of Mr Hurst. When I first watched the series, I thought, `Who's he? Oh, it must be Mr Hurst.' I'd always pictured him as something of a dandy (of more fashion than fortune), rather than the boorish sporting type that we see in the adaptation.

But, to answer your question -- or, rather, to fail to answer it -- JA doesn't give us much of a clue about the source of his wealth, though she indicates that both the Hursts are inclined to spend more than their income.
