Society shortcut.   Written by Mandy N (1/15/2004 7:44 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, I read somewhere..., penned by Line
Are you new?

While that yardstick seems pretty much correct I feel there were ways for Bingley to be established as gentry. We know Bingley has five thousand pounds ann. If he wanted to, I'm sure he could marry the daughter of an impoverished Earl, not just the daughter of a landed gentleman. (Although she may like Jane, I bet that's what Caroline's thinking!)... If Bingley married up a lord's daughter with her family connections, surely he'd be established gentry. Or am I talking through a stovepipe hat? ;)
