It's dawned on my why AD might have chosen to omit this from his adaptation. The Bennets are inferior to the Bingleys, not in rank, but in connections. As thee role of connection is an extremely subtle and complex idea to get across to modern audiences, the adaptation chose to substitute rank, which is readily understood.

What do you reckon?
