... that the rule of thumb that the British upper crust followed was that it took three generations for a family to really settle into its money. Why three generations, I don't know. Perhaps one reason was they thought that a family that still had its money after three generations was more likely to keep it? (The opposite of the "clogs to clogs" idea.)

So, if it was Bingley's father who made the family fortune, it would only be Bingley's children who would be considered gentry by everyone.
