I did not see this as something Darcy said himself.

Yes, it is the narrator who speaks here, but if we read the passage from the beginning, we have:

"The manner in which they spoke of the Meryton assembly was sufficiently characteristic."

I think the narrator is telling us what they had to say about the evening, even though it is not in dialogue form.
