] I wonder if it took that long for them to actually notice his behavior, or if they just put up with it for awhile due to his fortune and pleasing person.

Perhaps he danced the first two dances with Miss Bingley & Mrs Hurst, which wouldn't have seemed too awful (behaviour-wise), then declined to be introduced to any other women. If he first danced, even if it wasn't with the local ladies, but then walked around NOT interacting with the locals, that might have been when everybody decided he was "above being pleased."
