"...he was looked at with great admiration for about half the evening, till his manners gave a disgust which turned the tide of his popularity...."

I've always found it interesting that it took half the evening for the people to become disgusted with him. I wonder if it took that long for them to actually notice his behavior, or if they just put up with it for awhile due to his fortune and pleasing person.
