"[Lydia] had high animal spirits..."

What does that mean?

Also, at 15, she is a great favorite with the officers. How old are these officers? 18? 20? Older? I know that Lydia, though young, was old enough to be married. Still, she seems a little young to be interested in/interesting to the officers, whom, I assume, would be at least 5 years older. Does anyone else feel slightly uneasy about this?
