I got a different impression...   Written by GaryB (1/13/2004 3:57 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Miss Bingley's ambitions..... or affections ?, penned by Chandra S
Are you new?

I thought chapter 11 brings out her desires pretty straightforwardly. I especially love the scene where she affects being above balls and other social visits to her brother:

"I should like balls infinitely better," she replied, "if they were carried on in a different manner; but there is something insufferably tedious in the usual process of such a meeting. It would surely be much more rational if conversation instead of dancing made the order of the day."

"Much more rational, my dear Caroline, I dare say, but it would not be near so much like a ball."

I assume she says this because she thinks Darcy thinks *he's* above them. I also think this shows how little she understands of Darcy's character. Not that he's entirely comfortable with balls, of course ... but his discomfort is not pride or snobbishness, as Caroline's is.
