She had influence on people who give it to her   Written by Kathi (2/23/2004 9:39 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Comment on Lady Catherine., penned by Mandy N
Are you new?

] Charecters like Wickham and Lizzy attest to Lady Catherine's authoritive air and self-importance yet she does not seem a formidable charecter.

Lady C is not a formidible character to Lizzy because Lizzy doesn't give her that power. But Lady C does have a different effect on people who are awed by her title and wealth, like Sir William and Maria. And, I imagine, her tenants. I wouldn't care to be a tenant of hers that she did not consider sufficiently prosperous or harmonious.

Her title, her wealth, and her manner, in themselves, did give her power with some people -- probably a lot of people, in that place and time. But if you didn't find those impressive, then she didn't have power over you.
