As an unknown quantity to both Lizzy and the reader, early on we are in the dark about Darcy's real charecter. He appears to change from a disagreeable charecter to a sympathetic one. I feel Lizzie's journey of recognition toward 'the light' of Mr Darcy's real qualities is also the reader's journey. Interesting, I've heard many times how how light and sparkling P&P is. I din't realize the hero has a name that meant darkness. =)
