IIRC the bathing machines were only meant for women, right? No mixed parties. So Louisa and Caroline might travel out into deep waters in one? Whereas Mr H would have been allowed to splash about without restraint? Not that he seems inclined to exert himself.

Any information on the Scarborough Fair, Julie? ;-) Is that a more modern tradition.
