I think it must have been the seabathing that was the attraction.

Ther were spas a plenty in Derbyshire-Buxton,Ashbourne, Matlock to name but three......

They trekked over half the country to get to the East coast- and so it was the sea that bought them there.IMHO.

Which, in fact, was still a novelty for a lot of people in the early 19th century- remember Emma , who despite being rich, had never seen the sea?
