Also I think, by the differences in their clothing stlyes, the ladies wore 'house' garments before dinner time, and dressed up more elaborately/finely for dinner.

I wonder if they dressed finely for dinner even if visitors were not expected. Hope JulieW or some one I am can clear this up? Thanx!
