I did notice the contradiction.   Written by Emmeline (1/12/2004 10:42 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, The contradicting Mrs. Bennet, penned by Siobhan
Are you new?

]It is a pity they are not handsome! Not that I think Charlotte so very plain -- but then she is our particular friend."

]"She seems a very pleasant young woman," said Bingley.

]"Oh! dear, yes; -- but you must own she is very plain.

I think it is because Mrs Bennet did not want Mr Bingley to like Charlotte better than Jane.

It seems Mrs Bennet is saying that Charlotte is plain, but because she is their particular friend she did not think her so very plain, but then she wants Bingley to think Charlotte is very plain. LOL!
