As you say, this method would be harmless, distinctive and an early form of advertising, too! (Though do you think the shaved area would be visible from a distance, like from the drawing room of Longbourn to the drive outside?) I can't remember seeing any RCMP horses with those markings, so I don't know how close you'd have to be to read them.
