I just asked this question myself not long ago, and Captain Everett was kind enough to supply this very thorough response. The short answer is, Wickham (and Denny, also a Mister) could have been Ensigns or Lieutenants, but based on W's short seniority and certainly limited funds to purchase a higher rank, I would strongly guess him to have been an ensign in the militia.
