No comeuppance for Wickham.   Written by Mandy N (2/16/2004 8:44 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Another country, penned by Line
Are you new?

That is quite right. Counties do have their own charecter and customs. Traditionally people did say 'another country' simply meaning a far part of the country where they had no family ties so were unknown to locals. I must admit I haven't noted it as I should have done in the P&P text. I certainly couldn't imagine Wickham working hard nor achieving success by his own merit in his new commission. However, he is in the Regulars and technically could be called away. Checking the text, I see for Lizzy's sake, Darcy assisted Wickham further in his profession. I wonder what that implies. Purchase of a higher commission? As a frequent visitor to Bath and London it appears he stays within the country- no good riddance! Indeed, Wicham does very well out of the brother-in-law he has lied about, cheated and whose wife's family he has harmed.
