My Norton Critical Edition Written by Ramya (2/16/2004 2:29 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, "A Special License!", penned by Kristen G.

says that a special license was permission to marry procured from a bishop/archbishop instead of publishing the banns(announcing for 3? consecutive Sundays in the Church).

It was only available to the Aristrocracy, therefore indicative of status(Mrs. Bennet says that it is as good as marrying a Lord!)
