Are you new?

It's confusing, but when Wickham admits that he still has hopes of making his fortune in another "country", I think he means what we would call another "county" (no R) - another part of England, not another nation. (JA uses the word "country" for "county" more than once in P&P.) Also, IMO, the way he plans to make his fortune is to marry a rich woman, not to earn the money himself.
