Just on a point of interest I think Queen Elizabeth 1 wore the first wristwatch in Europe but as you say, I doubt they became commonplace till much later. I think a lady wore a watch on a chain at her waist didn't she? Snort! I can see Wickham winding up the watch of the Prince Regent each morn. I believe the Prince had a penchant for them. Actually, wouldn't a rogue like Wickham make a smooth,plausible courtier? The links provided by Julie W. and Kathleen have shown what various incomes bring in. I'm abit surprised Wickham, through Lydia, isn't asking a larger income as 3-400 pounds hardly put yous in the gentry class.I'm unsure if you could even keep a coach and 2 carriage horses. A genteel income was around 5-700 pounds per annum. This could be stretched to by the number of children you had.
