The horses were already employed on the farm for the day and so could not be had to pull the carriage. As much as it vexed everyone except Mrs. Bennet, Jane really had no option but to ride. The next day, Elizabeth is said to be no horsewoman and so she must walk, as the horses are once again employed in the fields.
